AREV welcomes the adoption by the European Parliament of the amendments to the BECA report that protect European wine culture

After the Special Committee on Cancer last December adopted the so-called BECA report, which may have been misinterpreted, AREV President Emiliano García-Page Sánchez welcomes the fact that the European Parliament has refused to "criminalize" wine , as it voted on the amendments needed to save Europe's wine sector in last night's plenary session of the European Parliament.
The report's initial proposal equated wine with other alcoholic beverages and moderate consumption with abuse, and failure to nuance this distinction endangered the sector, European culture and the Mediterranean diet, recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with very negative economic, social and environmental consequences for rural areas.
AREV also welcomes that the European Parliament has adopted an amendment that does not require alarm messages to be printed on the back labels of bottles. Mr. García-Page also said that today is "a great day for this immense product and culture" that represents the wine industry at European level.
AREV strongly supports the implementation of measures to fight cancer and believes that the concept of responsible consumption should be at the heart of prevention policies and the fight against overconsumption.
AREV congratulates all MEPs and political groups who, knowing the original report and following its request, have worked intensively in recent months to ensure that these amendments could be tabled and included in the plenary debate.
