Felicia JKI new breed 200 × 300

New multiple fungus-resistant grape variety Felicia receives approval.

Press Release of the Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI), Federal Research Center for Cultivated Plants No. 1/2021
The new variety from the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) is resistant to powdery mildew, downy mildew and black rot.
(Siebeldingen) Wines from classic grape varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir are familiar to every wine consumer in Germany. Wines from new varieties that can defend themselves against pests, such as the fungus-resistant Piwis, on the other hand, are still waiting to be discovered. The variety Felicia, the lucky one, joins this growing segment of the PiWi avant-garde in Germany.

Column - What sells well: from mainstream to characterful challenge

Do you know this? You talk your head off and in the end people do what they've always done: buy what they know. The willingness to try something new, let alone like it, is ... let's put it diplomatically, a rare commodity.
No, of course there are not THOSE people! If we ask consumer researchers, we get rather 1000 conditions for when which target group buys what and why at which price. The bottom line, however, is: supposedly "new" things are and have always been around, but they must always be at least 80 percent the same and thus known in order to be accepted.

Project Novisys - new grape varieties in minimum cutting - Final report

WINE QUALITY
The fact that high quality wines can be produced with new grape varieties, the PIWIs, is no longer a secret. This could be shown in the novisys project also for wines from the minimum pruning in the trellis. For the wine quality and type, the yield level, the state of health of the grapes and the right harvest time are decisive. Especially an excessive yield and a too early harvest quickly lead to unripe, thin and bitter wines with minimum pruning in the trellis, which are accompanied by a low color expression in red wines. For this reason, targeted yield reduction (BBCH scale: 75) is highly recommended in the first years of conversion. In addition, the smaller berries in the minimum pruning in the trellis lead to an increased proportion of berry skin and thus to a further berry skin-fruit flesh ratio.
Wines from minimum pruning in the trellis benefit from this. With a moderate yield level and harvest time adapted to the ripeness, aroma-intensive, fragrant and slender white wines as well as tannin-rich and color-intensive red wines can thus be produced in the new cultivation system.

NEW VARIETIES
THE marketing of PIWI wine is characterized by several challenges.

Text: Christoph Kiefer, M.Sc. and Prof. Dr. Gergely Szolnoki, Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences.

Fungal resistant (PIWI) grape varieties are the next logical step towards sustainable cultivation within organic viticulture. Although PIWI grape varieties achieve economic and environmental benefits for winegrowing enterprises, less than three percent of German vineyards are planted with them. Other wine-growing countries, such as France and Italy, are experiencing increased breeding success, but the proportion of PIWIs is also at a low level in these countries. This is mainly due to the lack of market acceptance by consumers. Customer acceptance of these innovative grape varieties remains low despite the increased demand for sustainable food.
Within VitiFIT, the team from Geisenheim is investigating the complete value chain of PIWI wines in order to better understand the attitudes and needs of producers, marketers and consumers. Based on this, a communication strategy will be developed at the end of the project to establish PIWIs on the market in the long term.
In this article, the current market acceptance is analyzed.
