International PIWI Wine Award Tasting: 413 wines from 15 countries

The international PIWI Wine Award 2020 was again a complete success.
The contest outcome contains 42 Top Gold medals, 175 Gold, 161 Silver and 29 Compliments. 27 PAR® Certified Master Tasters based throughout Germany *) could provide the usual quality and transparency of the results supported by the established digital infrastructure of WINE System AG.

Germany has submitted 170 wines achieving the most represented position during the tasting 2020, followed by Switzerland, Italy and Austria. As measured by the number of Top Gold awards, Germany and Switzerland doubtfully took the lead with 12 and 9 top results, followed by Austria with 6 Top Gold medals. Also, PIWI wines from Sweden, Poland, Denmark and Italy could achieve top position.

The stylistic and quality gamut was enormous. A look at the medals table shows a decrease in the qualitative mid-range compared to the previous years. Head of the tasting Martin Darting says: "Particular, winegrowers from the Southern regions had to face the extreme heat and droughtiness. Typically, the first year is not a big problem. However, should similar hot weather years follow, there is no chance to avoid an impact on the sensory features of the grapes. This caused many problems, primarily due to the lack of centuries-old viticultural experience in PIWI winegrowing like, for instance, Riesling is the case. "

Column - What I always wanted to say ...

Honestly, what is the problem with PIWIs? Why do most winegrowers have difficulties growing these new varieties?
There are many reasons for it, no one against it! Experts and those who call themselves such do not recognize any differences in blind samples. The varietal typicality, which does not exist anyway (Riesling is Riesling = nonsense - advertising slogan of the Pfalz), exists even less with the new varieties! The aroma is significantly influenced by humidity, sunlight and temperature (Hoppmann) and only about 20% by the variety itself, not to mention differently grafted grapes. Yes, that makes a difference in sensory perception!

General Meeting PIWI International eV
November 2020

Change of leadership in the Executive Board
The year 2020 has more or less turned all our lives upside down and provided us with new challenges. We had to cancel our annual PIWI wine trip and our general meeting could not take place as a face-to-face event either .... However, the year 2020 also brought new ways and possibilities, so we never thought that we would be able to hold our general meeting digitally.
On November 28, 37 participants from Germany, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and Switzerland took part in the digital meeting. The most important item on the agenda was the election of the board, the treasurer and the president.

The new board:
Alexander Morandell (Italy) President
Jiri Sedlo (Czech republic) | Vice President
Christian Waltl (Austria) | Treasurer
Bea Steinemann (Switzerland) | Secretary
Frantisek Madl (Czeck republic)
Wolfgang Renner (Austria)
Josef Engelhart (Germany)
Andreas Dilger (Germany)

Congratulations to the new Chair and Board and a big thank you to Katja Galler, Bruno Bosshardt and Hanno Maier for their years of commitment to PIWI International. We would also like to express our gratitude to our long-time office manager Susanne Sommer, who is taking maternity leave and parental leave.

"We want to continue step by step towards internationalization," said Alexander Morandell in his short greeting after his election as the new president of Piwi International. The 50-year-old from Bolzano takes over the office from Josef Engelhart, who remains a member of the board of the international working group for the promotion of fungus-resistant grape varieties. Morandell has been intensively involved with Piwis since 1999 and has been active in selection, variety breeding and consulting in the vine nursery sector for 20 years. "Besides internationalization, I want to work for the strengthening of the association, quick and uncomplicated solutions as well as clear rules for the cultivation of Piwi grape varieties," said the South Tyrolean.
