There is a strong societal demand and expectation for environmental and health protection. The EU plans to take further decisive steps to limit the use of environmentally harmful chemicals in agriculture. One of the prerequisites for the development of environmentally friendly, profitable and competitive viticulture is the creation and introduction of varieties resistant to the main pathogens, while maintaining good quality. The genetic results of the last decades make it possible to achieve these goals. As a result of the breeding activities of the Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology in Pécs, 6 white and 1 red varieties have received state approval and another 10 white and 3 red varieties are in the certification process. Community plant variety rights were granted for two innovative resistant grape varieties.

New information brochure "Fungus-resistant grape varieties" from the WBI Freiburg
The Freiburg State Viticulture Institute has published a new brochure on its fungus-resistant new varieties. The brochure is now available for download on the WBI website (https://wbi.landwirtschaft-bw.de/pb/,Lde/Startseite/Fachinfo/Pilzwiderstandsfaehige+Keltertraubensorten). The brochure is also available in English, French and Italian.
Furthermore, the WBI points out that the Souvignier Gris variety is a cross between Seyval Blanc x Zähringer. Cabernet Sauvignon and Bronner were originally assumed as parent varieties, and this information can still be found in some publications. However, a genome analysis of the seedling stock commissioned by the Freiburg State Viticulture Institute in 2019 clearly showed that the mother variety is Seyval Blanc and the father is the Zähringer variety.
Fungus-resistant grape varieties play a central role in the increasingly ecological orientation in viticulture. With the results of its resistance breeding, the Freiburg State Viticulture Institute is making a significant contribution to the protection of nature, profitability and the winegrowers in terms of sustainable vineyard management. Many of the new Freiburg breeds are also met with great interest outside of Germany and are now cultivated in over 30 countries. This makes the WBI one of the world's leading research institutions in vine breeding.

Black rot and KEF? - Not a real challenge!
According to multiple applications in 2021, PIWIS will occupy an area of around 145 hectares in Styria. This corresponds to 2.9% of the entire Styrian vineyard area. By far the most common varieties are Muscaris and Souvignier gris. As in previous years, current experiences from experimental cultivation are presented here in a condensed form.

Weather 2021
Last winter was characterized by a consistently good water supply. A very cold April was followed by a cool May. The latest shoot of the vines in the last 25 years was the result. Both months were also characterized by a high number of rainy days. The very warm and dry months of June and July were followed by a comparatively cool and humid August. September was again one of the warmer ones compared to previous years and turned out to be a special “ripening accelerator”.
Generally speaking, the conditions for fungal diseases in 2021 were not the best. Of course, that makes the winegrowers happy! In the crucial phase from May to July there were only 37 rainy days in the Leutschach branch (52 in 2020, 48 in 2019). Only 20% of the entire time there was leaf wetness *, which is significantly less than in the previous vegetation years 2020, 2019 and 2018 with approx. 25% each. All of this explains the relatively low black rot infection pressure in the past season.
Plant protection measures 2021
All PIWI varieties were treated against fungal diseases with the same frequency and intensity. Due to the successive increase in black rot (Guignardia bidwellii) in recent years, a stricter plant protection regime has been prescribed from the 5-leaf stage. From the 5-leaf stage to post-flowering, five treatments were carried out 7 to 12 days apart. Because of the increasing oidium pressure, a separate sulfur injection took place on August 10th.

PIWI varieties at a glance - results in the rainy year 2021
PIWI vines have been around for over a hundred years. Only a few were able to establish and hold onto. While the time of the regent seems to have expired, Léon Millot or Maréchal Foch are still being grown. But in times of ecological agriculture and climate change, more and more winegrowers are interested in new varieties that spring up like mushrooms. Piwi pioneer Edy Geiger provides an overview.
