New PIWI book by Fredi Strasser

Our PIWI and organic pioneer Fredi Strasser from Switzerland writes in his new book about soil, vine, care, wine growing, PIWI breeding and biodiversity. Franziska Löpfe describes the far-reaching experiences in building up the PIWI movement and the philosophy of Fredi Strasser. Jürg Willimann took wonderful photos of life on the winery with his camera. The author has taken great pains to present the many experiences, research results and professional contexts in a lively, easily understandable way, but at the same time to present everything so professionally that it can inspire wine lovers as much as wine experts.

Slow Food Germany - Online PIWI Tasting

On 3 July 2020, Slow-Food Germany together with Ecovin Baden tasted PIWI wines as a webinar at an online tasting. The speakers provided expert information on breeding, variety change, history of breeding and much more. The overwhelming interest in PIWI wines confirms our work at PIWI-International. Under the title "Zukunftsmusik im nachhaltigen Weinbau" the Slow-Food Magazine Germany published a detailed article about this PIWI tasting in its September issue.

Wine competitions for PIWI grape varieties

The current results of the wine competitions around PIWI wines show what high quality has already been achieved. They offer the consumer many opportunities to experience the new taste experiences of the new grape varieties.
BEST OF PIWI AUSTRIA: New / innovative grape varieties 2020
Since 2019, the PIWI-Austria regional group has been awarding a PIWI wine prize among the Austrian PIWI winegrowers. The competition was held for the second time in August 2020. The increase from 130 to 160 participants shows the great interest in environmentally friendly cultivation of PIWI vines in Austria.

BEST OF PIW FREIBURG 2020
This already traditional PIWI wine competition organised by the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg is held every summer. This year 180 PIWI wines from Europe took part in the categories of PIWI varietal wines and cuvées.
You can view the results here.
PIWI-Wein-Trophy and an article about PIWI-vines from Falstaff
The wine and gourmet magazine "Falstaff" has dedicated its September issue to PIWI wines. Within the framework of a PIWI Trophy, Falstaff selected various PIWI winegrowers, emphasising that wines made from fungus-resistant grape varieties make sustainability in viticulture tangible and thus strike a chord with the times. The diversity of the wines and the new sensory voyage of discovery by PIWIs also illustrate how exciting pleasure without environmental sins can be. Once again we congratulate all our PIWI International members for this award! Source: Falstaff Germany, Falstaff Austria and Falstaff Switzerland
PROJECT PIWI - THE PERFECT VINE
Viticulture without spray? What sounds like a pipe dream could now become reality. Thanks to new grape varieties that are immune to fungus, but still produce good wines. A big step towards sustainable viticulture.

Piwi-Medaillen-2020

New grape varieties allowed in Germany!

The new grape varieties go a long way until they are approved as quality wines. From the grapes produced by manual pollination, the core is washed out. The plant from the seedling must then prove its worth until, after several trials and crosses, a wine is obtained that meets the quality and resistance requirements. This can sometimes take decades until the "number" that has marked his life up to now gets a name. All the more reason to be pleased that VB Cal 6-04 now bears the name SAUVIGNAC. Other brand new PIWI grape varieties are called SAUVITAGE, CALARDIS BLANC or CALARDIS MUSQUÉ.

On our own behalf

The association stands and falls with its members, so we are happy about every new member. You can find the application form here!
The next general meeting will take place on 28 November in Kirchberg / Jagst.
